Maestro violinist Lalgudi Jayaraman no more

MUMBAI: Carnatic violinist, Lalgudi G Jayaraman passed away on 22 April in a private hospital. 

According to agencies, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa paid tribute to violin maestro Lalgudi G Jayaraman, describing his death as a “great loss” to the world of music. I was deeply grieved learning about his passing away,” she said.

Mestro was born at Lalgudi in Tiruchi district of Tamil Nadu. Born in the lineage of a disciple of the saint musician Thyagaraja, Sri Lalgudi Jayaraman inherited the essence of Carnatic music from his versatile father, late V R Gopala Iyer, who trained him meticulously.

He expanded the style of violin playing and established a unique style that came to be known as 'Lalgudi Bani'.

His was awarded with Padma Shri in 1972 and Padma Bhushan in 2001. He was also honoured with State Vidhwan of Tamil Nadu and Fellow of Sangeet Natak Akademi in Tamil Nadu.

He has accompanied the great maestros of the past including Ariyakudi Ramanuja Iyengar, MM Dhandapani Desikar, GN Balasubramaniam, Madurai Mani Iyer and Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer.

He is survived by his wife Rajalakshmi, son Lalgudi GJR Krishnan and daughter Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi.
