Music stalwarts to mesmerize in 'Thumri Festival 2012'

MUMBAI: Reviving the devotional and romantic notes of different thumris, music stalwarts like Shubha Mudgal, Vidushi Girija Devi, Pt Ajoy Chakraborty and Malini Awasthi will perform in a two-day event ‘Thumri Festival 2012’ at Kamani Auditorium in Delhi on 13 -14 August 2012.

Organised by Sahitya Kala Parishad, the fest will be inaugurated by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.

The event will commence with performances of noted virtuoso Shubha Mudgal and Bengali vocalist Pt Ajoy Chakraborty while the second day will witness performances by celebrated exponent of thumri Vidushi Girija Devi and her disciple Malini Awasthi.

Having its origins in the North West India, the thumri genre is said to be associated with Lord Krishna’s raas leela. Over the past decades, the thumri musical style has gained immense popularity amongst varied audience who enjoy its odes to nature and love.
