One Direction, Adele enter Guinness World Records

MUMBAI: Brit boy band One Direction entered into the Guiness World Records as the first band from UK to debut at the US Billboard charts with their first album 'Up All Night.'

The band's album, released globally early 2012, propelled by its hit single 'What Makes You Beautiful' has also topped the charts in 16 countries and has sold more than three million copies.

"Being the first British band to debut at number one in America with a debut album is something that we would have never even have dreamt of. We are incredibly proud to have this achievement included in the Guinness World Records book," the band said. The band has also performed to a global audience at the closing ceremony of the London Olympics.

The five member British-Irish boy band was discovered in 'The X Factor Season Seven' where they were placed third in the reality show.  They were signed to Simon cowell's Syco Records before shifting to Columbia Records.

The boys have also overtaken 90's sensation Spice Girls, who previously held the record for highest entry into the US album chart by a British group when 'Spice' entered at Number six.

The band's fellow artist Adele also entered the Guinness World Records  for digital sales of her smash album '21'. The album has sold 1.8 million digital copies in the US and 700,000 in the UK, making it the biggest-selling digital album in US and UK. It surpassed Lady Gaga's 'The Fame' to become the biggest-selling UK digital album on record.

Adele also holds the crown for first female, the first UK artist and the fastest musician to reach digital sales of one million in the US within five months of her album's launch.

'Rolling in the Deep' was the biggest-selling digital track in a calendar year in America after it was downloaded 5.81 million times in 2011.
The new Guinness World Records 2013 edition is available from 13 September.
