Phat Phish Records sets off Jet Lag

MUMBAI: Phat Phish Records launched a fusion of Punjabi folk-Middle Eastern fare with a touch of Sufi sound album by Da-Saaz titled "Jet Lag" on 16 May.

Jet Lag is an album where Sufiana meets electro, Hindi meets Farsi, Urdu, Punjabi and Turkish sounds mingle with percussion from across the world. Da-Saz started this project with the idea of creating a bridge between different cultures and musical poles. The album's 11 tracks, most of them composed and mixed by David Scrufari, were recorded in Da-Saz's home-studio in New Delhi.

Dhruv Sangari, doing the vocals, voice cuts beautifully through the sunny summer evening as its strains an early morning raga, giving us an earthy, rustic feel. Lionel Dentan, electro-Saaz, mixes eclectic electronic sounds and instantly can rhyme in his Turkish saaz giving a vibrant sense of flavor, even as Gennady Lavrentiev, guitar-violin, a musical jack of all trades strums on his guitar gently.

When asked about his style of singing and the musical blend with his band, Dhruv sangari explained "I wasn't too keen on my singing classes in school, but after learning from one of my biggest inspirations, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, I perceived things very differently. Our music comes out very spontaneously which is meaningful and sends a political message to people at times."
