Radio Mirchi Kolkata Police Friendship Cup enters `Limca Book of records`
MUMBAI: Kolkata Police Friendship Cup organised by Radio Mirchi FM Kolkata has entered the Limca Book of Records for being the largest football tournament in terms of participation and scale in India.
Starting 29 June, the Kolkata Police Friendship Cup 2007 involved 7,770 participants from 519 teams who played in 575 matches across 55 days. The three-tier tournament began with the Thana level followed by the divisional level and then the inter-divisional level.
At the finals of the tournament, each member of the winning team was rewarded with a 125 CC Xpressions motorbike and members of the runners up team were given a mobile phone. Additionally, the three best footballers were felicitated with the motorbike.Radio Mirchi aired songs composed by Prithibi, the famous city band exclusively for this event. The station also organised several on-air and on-ground activities which includes a five day long road-show across the city and a tram ride for the participants as well as various contests during the tournament.
Radio Mirchi Kolkata station director Sriram Kilamb said, "We were confident of the fact that the Kolkata Police Friendship Cup has the potential and all the reasons to become one of the largest tournaments because of its magnitude. It was just a matter of time before someone gave it due recognition and we are grateful to the `Limca Book of Records` for recognising the good work and initiatives undertaken by Radio Mirchi".
