Singer Swarnalatha passes away at 37

MUMBAI: Noted South Indian playback singer and National award winner Swarnalatha died at a private hospital in Chennai on Sunday following a lung infection.

The 37-year-old, hailing from Palakkad had been suffering from a lung conditon for many months. She complained of breathlessness and was rushed to a private hospital in Adyar, where she passed away. She did not record for films during the period of her treatment.

Trained in Carnatic music since the age of three, Swarnalatha has several chartbusters to her credit. Early in her career, songs such as �Malaiyil Yaro Manathodu Pesa' in the film �Shatriyan' earned her a place among the top singers in the industry.

She won the 1995 National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for her song 'Porale Ponnuthayi', composed by A R Rahman, in the Tamil film 'Karuththamma'.

The singer who made her debut in â€?Neethikku Thandanai' with the song â€?Chinnachiru Kiliye Kannamma,'composed by  M.S.Viswanathan, has sung nearly 6,000 songs in seven Indian languages including Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, Hindi and Malayalam since 1989.
