Swift, Fun, Maroon 5 lead Billboard Music awards nominations

MUMBAI: Country-Pop star Taylor Swift, New York pop group Fun and LA’s pop rock band Maroon 5 lead 2013 Billboard Music Awards with nominations in 11 categories including the coveted Top Artist prize for Swift and Maroon 5.

R&B diva Rihanna follows with nominations in 10 categories this year, including Top Artist. With Canadian pop star Carly Rae Jepsen getting the nod in nine categories this year including Top Hot 100 Song, Top Pop Song, Top Digital Song and Top Radio Song.

Brit boy act One Direction, which released two albums in the US in 2012 will compete against Swift, Maroon 5, Rihanna and Justin Bieber for the Top Artist prize and will square off against Jepsen, Gotye, Psy and the Lumineers for Top New Artist.

The Billboard Music Awards, will be held on 19 May at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and will be aired live.

The awards have also recognized the demand and influence of Electronic Dance Music (EDM) by adding EDM categories. Vying for the Top EDM Album prize will be acts like David Guetta, Skrillex, Swedish House Mafia and deadmau5  while finalists for Top EDM Song include Baauer's "Harlem Shake," Calvin Harris' "Feel So Close" and Swedish House Mafia's "Don't You Worry Child" (featuring John Martin), respectively.

Highlight of the awards will be honouring of iconic and the highly influential pop star Prince with the coveted Billboard Icon Award.

Performers at the ceremony will include Swift, Bieber, Bruno Mars and Miguel and it will be hosted by Tracy Morgan and executive produced by Don Mischer.

Selection for the Billboard Music Awards finalists were based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital singles sales, radio airplay, touring, streaming and social interactions on Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, VEVO, Spotify and other popular online destinations for music. These measurements were tracked year-round by Billboard and its data partners, including Nielsen Entertainment and Next Big Sound.
