Archana's Diary: MeA Day 8 ÔÇô Shreya Ghoshal ÔÇô Super melodious!
One singer who feels like a family member with Radio City, purely because she loves Musical-E-Azam and its live feel, is Shreya Ghoshal. And I'm sure no one could agree more that in live singing, Shreya Ghoshal sounds like we are listening to a record or a CD. She is simply fantastic, and going by the number of calls we got for Shreya, one could tell how many fans she has out there – in Mumbai and internationally. How? Coz we realized that from this year, June 26th is celebrated as Shreya Ghoshal Day, all the way in Ohio in the US of A. When we asked Shreya how she felt about it, she said it's amazing how a voice can connect so well with people she doesn't even know. Like even a chai wala' sitting in his tapri' in a village shares a fan-star relationship with her. The fact that purely through singing talent an artist can get this kind of honor surprises her.
But maintaining her sweet voice at its best is no easy task, especially during live shows. In Pune, recently, she sounded amazing despite her voice having totally gone. It was almost a miracle that on stage while having no idea if she would be able to sing or no, she sang the title track of U Me and Hum and the audience had no idea that her voice was affected.
Shreya is considered to be the sexiest looking singer too. All my male friends keep asking, Is she as hot as she sounds?.. Oh Boy! Is she in great shape? But in spite of being so fit and fab, it was surprising to know she doesn't like to do yoga and all she enjoys is playing games on her iPad. Angry Bird is a favourite, she told me.
Curious fact - Shreya hates her cell phone ringing. That's why it's always on silent or vibrate.
We have a lot to thank Lata Didi for. Had Lataji's voice not inspired Shreya, she would have not taken up singing as a profession. In fact she was planning to take up engineering, MBBS, or some technical field, as she comes from a family heavily into academics.
But every time she would listen to Lata Didi's voice, she would get mesmerized and aspire to be able to sing like her some day. Thanks to her fantastic karma – and of course, her stupendous ability -- Lata Didi mentions Shreya's name every time she is asked which singer she enjoys listening to the most amongst the newer lot.
Other than her mother and father who constantly pushed her to better singing heights, she also credits Sanjay Leela Bhansali, who gave her the first film, and Kalyanji bhai, who insisted that Shreya shift to Mumbai from Rajasthan.
Shreya Ghoshal has a huge crush on Daniel Radcliff; in fact, she's dying to watch the latest Harry Potter. Also, Robert Patterson is one guy she wants to date for sure.
I can't get over how she was given the National Award for two films. One, the Marathi film, Jhogwa, and the other, the Bengali film Antahee. Only because the distinguished jury was confused which one she'd sung better for!
On MeA, when she sang Aaj Dil Gustaakh Kai' from Blue, I realized how totally killer her range is! Shreya didn't sing it in her usually sweet voice; instead, she dipped into her large bag of a wide range of textures and brought out a huskiness that took the track to absolutely another level! While she – in fact, nobody – can be another Lata ji, with Shreya, we are sure the super melodious legacy of the great singer will continue.
Love you, Shreya!
