Sufi Gospel - Presentation based on Poetry and Music
Sufi Gospel - Presentation based on Poetry and Music by Sonam Kalra with Alex Fernandes, Ahsan Ali Khan, Rajesh Prasanna, Amaan Ali Khan and Daniel Paul.
The Sufi Gospel Project takes a broad view on the message of love and harmony, professed across various religions. It seeks to blend the voices of faith, through prayer, poetry and music. Traditional western gospel melds with Indian classical sounds, and Indian spiritual texts are enriched by elements of western poetry to create a sound that touches every soul. Revealing that no matter what the language of the lyrics, or the ethnicity of the sounds, there is but one Universal language, the language of faith.
The group led by Sonam Kalra, an accomplished Opera, Gospel and Jazz singer with formal training in Indian music, includes performers of diverse faiths: Sikh, Hindu, Muslim and Christian, all singing in unison, transcending the barriers of religion and language. The presentation blends Khusrau's Persian and Urdu couplets with Amazing Grace, Kabir shares the stage with Abide with Me and Bulleh Shah's voice is heard amidst English and Gaelic texts. The presentation also features Ray Charles' Hallelujah sung to Indian instruments, works of Rumi, Swami Vivekananda and Rabia Basri, blended with poetry of E. E. Cummings, Mary Fry and others.
As part of Sama'a: The Mystic Ecstasy - Festival of Sufi Music.
