Laaga Chunari Mein Daag

Director - Pradeep Sarkar

Music director - Shantanu Moitra

A Yash Raj production; directed by Pradeep Sarkar. From assisting the director of Mission Kashmir to directing Parineeta, Sarkar has come a long way. Shantanu Moitra, the music director for the movie, has always attracted music lovers to his intense compositions.

The promos have created a rage, but the million dollar question is - will the music have the same effect? Shantanu, who has composed music for movies such as Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi, Lage Raho Munna Bhai and Eklavya, all three of which belong to different genres, has something more to offer with this one. Each song in Laaga chunari mein daag is different from the other.

The title track in the album is a very mystifying song. As the title of the movie is 'The journey of a woman', the song explains the journey in a very in-yoour- face style. It leaves the listener in a very gloomy mood. The song is that of pain, torment and regret in a woman's life.

Singers Shubha Mudgal and Meeta Vashisht have sung the title track with all their heart and soul. Composed by interspersing the original Manna Dey track with some memorable lyrics penned by Swanand Kirkire, the song conveys the essence of the film succinctly. Despite being trained in Hindustani classical music, Shubha Mudgal harbours perpetual curiosity for other kinds of music.

The other song that will keep you humming is 'Hum toh aise hai bhaiyaa'. It is a very bubbly and joyful song. The lyrics are very real and portray a true India feel. It explains the Indian traditional way of living. The lead female singers are Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal, along with Swanand Kirkire (who's penned the lyrics) and Pranab Biswas. Sunidhi has yet again proved her versitality and so has Shreya Ghoshal.

A completely diverse song in the album is 'Ehi thaiyaa moti'which gives a traditional Bengali feel. The song is slow but tends to grow on the listener. The song is peaceful and very well sung. Rekha Bharadwaj has maintained her voice image that she created with Godmother and Maqbool.

The song 'Zara gungunalein chalo'is another odd flower in the bouquet. It starts with a very French music note. But after the prelude, the song moves on to a completely different tangent. The song is not very appealing and not one of those that would stay on your mind at one hearing. However Babul Supriyo and Mahalakshmi Iyer have done a good job.

'Kachi kaliyaan'is a fast number but the lyrics being very repetitive. The singers Sonu Nigam, KK, Sunidhi Chauhan and Shreya Ghoshal have given a very lively feel to the song. The song is a typical boy tease girl song. But it's entertaining and might be a favourite at weddings for sometime.

The last song of the album is 'Ek teekhi teekhi si ladki'which is a romantic number. The music is very mediocre. The singers KK and Shreya Ghoshal have very well used their flirty voices and made the song sound better. The lyrics are also very predictable.

All in all, an album worth adding to your collection as it would be the one you listen to in any mood. There is a song to pick for every occasion and situation. Laaga Chunari Mein Daag is going to be another feather in the cap of the Yash Raj Films series of hit music all through.
