Selena Gomez & the Scene - When the Sun Goes Down

Artist: Selena Gomez

Label: Universal Music India

Selena Gomez has proved that she doesn't need to be tagged as Disney Princess or Bieber's girlfriend to be a center of attraction. Selena Gomez & the Scene third album When the Sun Goes Down' has stirred buzz in the music industry.

The album comprising of 12 tracks belongs to the pop genre and falls on the theme of self-empowerment. When the Sun Goes Down' is an easy going and laid back album with snappy tunes and feel good lyrics.

Songs like Who Says,' Middle of Nowhere' and We Own the Night' is an enjoyable uplifting straightforward pop track with some polished techno-tunes and simple guitar notes. The lyrics suit a typical chick flick which deals with all sorts of teen trouble and caters to the younger generation.

Selena has tried to break her pop diva image and has experimented with the electro-disco ditties like 'Bang Bang Bang', 'Outlaw' and 'When the Sun Goes Down'.

Bang Bang Bang is popular 80s styled synthesizer-powered, new wave groove with the trendy electronic harmonies and follows the trend of pop divas. When the Sun Goes Down' powers on electric guitar riff giving the album a bit of an edge with some sped up vocals. The track Out law' is the perfect pop song but gets tedious due to the profuse synthesizers.

Hit the Lights' and Whiplash' are club dance song that make no sense and comes out of nowhere in a pop album. Whiplash' co-penned by Britney Spear seems to give whiplash of her 2008 song Womanizer,' but the all grown-up eccentric style doesn't go well with Selena singing, and the rap verses in the song should definitely not be tried again.

Other songs of the album â€?That's More like It' co-written by Katy Perry features her signature style of girl-power lyrics with Selena's vocals to add in it whereas  â€?My Dilemma' is a breathy, dance floor song with Selena's auto-tuned vocals highlighting the influence of Katy Perry. The album ends with a bilingual Spanish track â€?Dices,' beautifully translated into different language without skipping any beat or the energy.

Overall, the album is a mixture of good and average tracks. Through this album Selena has dared to explore other genre leaving her pop-diva image behind, which is quiet admiring. Inspite of Selena consistent efforts to experinment with beats, the album cashes and largely depend on the pop genre tracks to subsist in the pop-charts.
