Lip service: actors who played singers on the big screen

MUMBAI: Shahid Kapoor will soon be seen in ‘Udta Punjab’ playing the role of a Punjabi rockstar- Tommy Singh.

Shahid shared his first rockstar look on Twitter recently.

Which brought to our mind the numerous other film stars who have essayed singers on screen. Here's a quick recap to bring you up to speed.

Ranbir Kapoor, Rockstar (2011)

The Imtiaz Ali directed, musical romantic drama showed Ranbir’s journey from a college student ‘Janardhan’ to international rock sensation ‘Jordan’. A R Rahman's music remained the soul of the film with ‘Sadda Haq’ becoming the youth anthem.

Farhan Akhtar, Rock on!! (2008)

Probably, the first movie that fulfilled the need of Bollywood, based typically on singers and music. 'Rock On' is a story of four friends who split and reunite to create music. Akhtar played one of the members of the band and also sang most of the songs in the film. The majestic trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy composed for this film.

Rajeev Khandelwal, Soundtrack (2011)

Although, ‘Soundtrack’ ended with a flop-tag at the box office, it received positive criticism from the audience and critics. The story revolves around a deaf DJ (Rajeev Khandelwal) who turns out to be a renowned music composer and records the twists and turns in his life. The movie was only slightly based on the life of famed composer Beethoven.

Rishi Kapoor, Karz (1980)

Bollywood showman Subhash Ghai directed the movie in which Rishi Kapoor is reborn as Monty, who is a successful singer in this life. The legendary duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal produced the music. ‘Om Shanti Om’ and ‘Dard-e-Dil’ were among the hits in the film.

Amitabh Bachchan, Abhimaan (1973)

This film is one of the masterpieces of Bollywood where Amitabh Bachchan plays the character of a well-established singer, who also persuades his wife (Jaya Bachchan) to enter singing profession and then resents her success. The film is still remembered for its songs composed by S D Burman.

Aditya Roy Kapoor, Aashiqui 2 (2013)

The year 2013 saw an era in Hindi cinema where impactful music made a comeback through Aashiqui 2. Aditya Roy Kapoor played a successful singer who loses his stardom due to alcoholism and thereafter turns a minor singer (Shraddha Kapoor) into a rising star.

Lucky Ali, Sur- the Melody of Life (2002)

This musical film can be termed as Bollywood’s most underrated films whose story-line spins around a music teacher (Lucky Ali) who is in deep search of someone as good, if polished, would be mega-star. The film’s music was composed by M M Keeravani and became a big rage worldwide.
