Napster opens DRM- free digital music store

MUMBAI: Los Angeles-based web and music service Napster has launched its DRM-free digital music stores. Napster announced that it will sell DRM-free tracks for 99 cents and albums at $9.95, which is comparable with Apple's iTunes Plus DRM-free songs. Prior to this Napster had offered songs protected with Microsofts Windows-based DRM (digital rights management) system, which prevented users from illegally making multiple copies or distributing music tracks to other people.

MUMBAI: AOL Music announced the launch of two new websites dedicated to urban and country music genre. The sites are named The Boot and The Boom Box. FM preferred over audio entertainment in US: Sonoro study

MUMBAI: A survey conducted in San Diego by Sonoro audio states that despite the wide popularity of portable music sources, consumers prefer to listen to some form of radio more than MP3 players and CDs. The study states, 57 percent of the time is spent listening to some form of radio, AM, FM or Internet. According to Arbitron and Edison Media Research, 33 million Americans 12 and older listen to Internet radio stations during the week, up from 29 million in 2006

Sun TVs SFM to launch in Kochi on 21 May

MUMBAI: Sun TV Network Kal Radio is launching its FM station SFM in Kochi on 21 May. The launch is through subsidiary company Kal Radio. With this, SFM's total number of stations have gone up to 38 in India. SFM already operates in Chennai, Combaitore, Tirunelveli, Visakhapatnam, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Bhubaneswar, Tirupati, Madurai, Tuticorin, Lucknow, Bhopal, Pondicherry, Calicut, Indore, Vijayawada, Varanasi, Tiruchy, Rajahmundry and Kanpur among others. SFM will launch seven more stations across the country as it holds license for 45 stations across the country.

Phat Phish Records sets off Jet Lag

MUMBAI: Phat Phish Records launched a fusion of Punjabi folk-Middle Eastern fare with a touch of Sufi sound album by Da-Saaz titled "Jet Lag" on 16 May. Jet Lag is an album where Sufiana meets electro, Hindi meets Farsi, Urdu, Punjabi and Turkish sounds mingle with percussion from across the world. Da-Saz started this project with the idea of creating a bridge between different cultures and musical poles. The album's 11 tracks, most of them composed and mixed by David Scrufari, were recorded in Da-Saz's home-studio in New Delhi.

UK Digital album sales hit an all time high

MUMBAI: According to newly released figures from the official UK Charts Company - the group which tracks U.K. chart positions, the digital album sales climbed by 69.3 percent in comparison to the first quarter of 2007. The company also confirmed that sales of digital single tracks climbed 42.3 percent, every year. The news is encouraging for the music industry since it means that digital music buyers are beginning to see album purchases as viable as using services such as iTunes.
