UTV makes grand mogul entry into music arena with Jodhaaà

MUMBAI: The much awaited, twice delayed music launch of an epic of love- Ashutosh Gowariker's Jodhaa Akbar finally took place at Mumbai's Grand Hyatt, amidst much fanfare. Between Ash (Ashutosh Gowariker) and Aish (Aishwariya Rai Bachhan), there was a long list of guests who graced the event - Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, Javed Akhtar, A R Rahman, Aushotosh Gowariker, Shatrughan Sinha, Sanjay Khan, Zayed Khan, Sonu Nigam and politician Amar Singh, among others.

Motorola acquires Soundbuzz, plans Motomusic in India

MUMBAI: Motorola has acquired Soundbuzz, the privately held, leading pan-Asian music provider founded by Sudhanshu Sarronwala. The acquisition, which is subject to customary conditions, is expected to close in the first quarter of 2008. Terms of the transaction were not disclosed, says an official release.

Ovation TV acquires Universal music group's IMF

MUMBAI: Ovation TV, the arts TV network backed by Hubbard Media and Harvey and Bob Weinstein has acquired International Music Feed (IMF), a music video channel operated by Universal Music Group. The network will add IMF's 8 million monthly subscribers to its existing base of 17 million across Time Warner and Comcast cable systems, and DirecTV satellite service. IMF features concerts, interviews and music videos and was launched in 2005. Under terms of the deal, Universal Music Group gained a minority equity stake in Ovation.

Trai boost to FM: 700+ licenses in 260+ cities recommended

NEW DELHI: Much to the delight of the FM radio industry, the sector regulator Trai today recommended that more than 700 licenses be issued right across the country, with most of the more than 260 towns and cities being granted at least three - some even four - separate licenses. Trai today issued a consultation paper on the industry that it had predicted earlier, when chairperson Nripendra Mishra jad told indiantelevision.com in December last that Trai felt it is only good to open the sector across the country at one go, rather than in phases.

Big Music releases music of Al Risalah

MUMBAI: Big Music and Home Entertainment has released the audio of Al Risalah, the blockbuster movie on the times and teachings of the Prophet of Islam. Moustafa Akkad the director has wanted the story to be told in English, so that people all around the world can enjoy it. He felt he needed to pay a tribute to the Middle East, where it took place. The English and Arabic versions of the film were shot simultaneously, scene by scene. The English version was released as The Message, while the Arabic version became Al-Risalah.

Worldwide Music releases Majumdar's album

MUMBAI: Eminent flautist Pandit Ronu Majumdar's album 'Bansuri' was launched at south Mumbai's Planet M on Monday. Released by Worldwide Music, the album was launched by well known music director Vishal Bharadwaj . Recording Academy, CBS Interative, Youtube team up for 'My Grammy Moment 2008'

MUMBAI: The Recording Academy in the US has tied up with CBS Interactive, video sharing site Youtube and rock band Foo Fighters for the"My Grammy Moment 2008" contest. The contest will enable undiscovered talent to vie for a chance to perform on stage with the Foo Fighters at the 50th Annual Grammy Awards. The US music industry's most prestigious event takes place on 10 February 2008 and will air in India on Star World.

Sony BMG to sell music through Amazon MP3

MUMBAI: Sony BMG, a joint venture between Sony and Bertelsmann Music Group, is selling music through Amazon's MP3 store. Media reports say that Sony BMG will make at least part of its collection available without digital rights management (DRM). DRM restricts the use of music downloaded from the Internet. Sony BMG will become the last of the top four music labels to drop DRM, following Warner Music Group, EMI and Vivendi's Universal Music Group.

Gajendrra Singh targets movie, fiction

MUMBAI: Saibaba Telefilms promoter Gajendrra Singh, synonymous with music talent hunts on television, now plans to diversify into other genres. Singh now plans to make a feature film, a fiction show for television as well a different genre of reality show for TV. These three different genres are part of Singh's plans for 2008, he told www.radioandmusic.com in an exclusive chat. Among his plans are a show for NDTV Good Times, details of which he does not want to divulge at this stage.

Worldspace satellite radio secures $40 million financing facility

MUMBAI: Worldspace satellite radio has secured a $40 million financing facility from Yenura Pte. The company secured a waiver of certain pre-payment obligations owed to the holders of its existing debt. The facility supports the company's preparations for the launch of its European mobile service in the Italian market and business development activities in selected markets. However, Worldspace will continue to seek to secure additional financing from a variety of sources, including existing and new investors.
