Morn to Dusk Event Details – 1 December 2019

9:00am| Morn to Dusk - Hindustani Vocal Music Recital Morning Melodies by Ustad Rashid Khan | Tata Theatre, NCPA

A raga provides the melodic matrix for a performance in the Indian art music tradition. Among various features relating to the concept of raga, its relationship with diurnal and seasonal time cycles is an exciting one. Ustad Rashid Khan, with his robust yet sonorous voice, uncanny technical control over sargam and taankari, effortless rendition of varied forms from khayal and tarana to thumri and geet, is one of the most sought – after vocalists today. This concert will feature traditional compositions of the Rampur-Sahaswan gharana, including bada khayal, chhota khayal and tarana in ragas assigned to the second quarter of the morning.

3:00pm| Morn to Dusk - Scent of the Earth by Alarmel Valli and Arundhathi Subramanium Kala by Malavika Sarukkai | Tata Theatre, NCPA

Malavika Sarukkai presents Kala, which illustrates the concept of time as that which defines and is a measure, but when taken to another level, brings freedom and is a release. A classical dancer and a modern poet work in counterpoint, journeying across geographies, languages, moods and styles, aiming to distil in their own ways.

7:00pm| Morn to Dusk - Music and Dance Duet Maestros Meet with Pt. Birju Maharaji and Ajoy Chakrabarty| Tata Theatre, NCPA

Ajoy Chakrabarty is a torchbearer of Patiala gharana. With an astounding control over voice and command over diverse genres such as khayal, thumri, Rabindra sangeet and light music, today, he is acclaimed as an outstanding vocalist and a respected guru. Pt. Birju Maharaj is a living legend amongst us. As the Head of Kalka Bindadin gharana of Lucknow, he has rendered yeoman service to Kathak with his masterful technique, choreography and extraordinary artistry of portraying bhav (emotions) through abhinaya. For the first time in Mumbai, the maestros will come together to explore the world of thumri through voice and dance movements. While Chakrabarty will render thumri compositions in Patiala style, Maharaj will portray emotions depicted in the compositions through abhinaya (interpretation and depiction through gestures and facial expressions).

9:00pm | The Manganiyar Seduction – An Audio Visual Spectacle by Director: Mr. Roysten Abel | Jamshed Bhabha Theatre

The Manganiyars are a community of musicians who hail from the heart of the desert in Rajasthan. Traditionally, they are the keepers of their patrons’ genealogy and perform at various occasions for them, who in turn provide them with sustenance. The Manganiyar seduction is an internationally acclaimed audio- visual spectacle. This colourful production brings together nearly 40 talented Manganiyar musicians, both vocalists and instrumentalists, in a truly magical setting. Their folklore unfolds with an exciting choreography of melodies that are persuasive and compulsive rhythms, building into a finale of breath-taking interplay of sound and light.
