The current size of the music industry stands at Rs 1200 crore and piracy occupies almost 50 per cent of the same, amounting to Rs 600 crore. Piracy is an issue which continues to grow as technology advances in creative industries like films, music or games. Piracy occurs when there is a better and cheaper way of producing a product and there is a demand for that cheaper duplicate product. As technology advances, piracy problems are getting more and more compounded.

FWICE strike hits music industry

MUMBAI: Over 1000 music directors, music technicians and recordists are staying away from work today , to mark their support to the strike called by the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE). Music studios in Mumbai's Film City and recording studios have been hit hard by the indefinite strike called by the FWICE that is demanding stipulated wages and regulated working hours. A total of about 1.5 lakh cine employees are on strike currently.

Sankalp dumps three major labels' songs

MUMBAI: Dandiya organiser Sankalp has decided to abstain from playing songs copyrighted to three major labels namely, T-Series, Big Music and Yashraj. The reason cited by Sankalp for this are the exhorbitant music royalties demanded by these labels for the music. The move means many of the current popular chartbusters belonging to these labels will be missing from the Sankalp roster this year. Sankalp's chief attraction, Falguni Pathak would also refrain from singing Himesh's latest compositions, which are a hit among the dandiya players.

Mumbai pays tribute to Queen's new album

MUMBAI: Legendary rock band 'Queen', which released their first studio album, The Cosmos Rocks with multi instrumentalist and Grammy nominated vocalist Paul Rodgers recently, was paid tribute by Mumbai's music connoisseurs on Tuesday at the Hard Rock Cafe. The album, released in the EU on 13 September, is scheduled to be launched in North America on 28 October.

AIR becomes English tutor for Jharkhand school kids

MUMBAI: Jharkhand will introduce an interactive radio programme — Aao Angrezi Sikhein — for primary schoolchildren from 2 October. The programme, initiated by Jharkhand Education Project Council (JEPC) in association with the All India Radio, Ranchi has 150 lessons in English designed under the project. Initially, it will cover Hazaribagh, Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Chaibasa and Daltonganj, and based on the success, the JPEC plans to cover all the districts of the state.

Swarathma heads to Singapore for Sutasi

BANGALORE: Radio City Live winner band Swarathma is making its first international trip to Singapore to participate in the 'Sutasi' Song Contest and Talent Search (Sutasi) on 1 October 2008. 99 regional finalists from all over Asia will converge in Singapore for a chance to gain a place in the Grand Final of Sutasi. The filming of the event is taking place at the NUS Cultural Centre Hall on 3, 5 and 7 October, and will be aired at a later date.

Himesh keeps date with Mumbai radio stations

MUMBAI: Singer actor Himesh Reshammiya is bound to be a busy man this week. On Tuesday, he had dates with Radio Mirchi, Big FM and Red FM, and on Wednesday he will perform at Planet M, Inorbit Mall in Malad. More pre-Karzzz activities are also likely to be in store. On Tuesday afternoon, Himesh came to meet and greet the Radio Mirchi contest winners at the Mirchi offices. Virgin goes Absolute in UK

Virgin Radio morphed into Absolute Radio at 7.45 am UK time on Monday morning, ending its 15 year old stint as a Richard Branson brand. The rebrand has been supported by a ?5m advertising campaign, which revolves around its new slogan "Discover real music". Announced with a medley of classic rock and pop music on Christian O'Connell's Breakfast Show, the relaunch follows the station's ?53.2m acquisition by Times of India subsidiary TIML Golden Square in May.

Misty gets a different frequency for Gangtok station

MUMBAI: The PCM Group promoted Radio Misty is likely to be granted a change in frequency in Gangtok, where it is due to launch in a month. Misty, which is aired in the 94.3 MHz frequency on FM in Siliguri, will be granted another frequency in Gangtok. The station applied for the frequency change to the I&B Ministry which has in principle, approved of the station's request, but is yet to issue a formal letter.
