Think of the rains, and you automatically think of Malhar, the oldest and one of the most melodious ragas of Hindustani classical music, with its innumerable varieties attributed to nature’s gift of the monsoon season. The romance that Malhars bring to the mind is inescapable, the music of this season reflects this joy – all versions of raga Malhar are lyrical, tender and easy on the ear.

Malhar ragas like Miyan Malhar, Gaud Malhar, Megh Malhar, Ramdasi Malhar, and Sur Malhar are traditionally sung or played on instruments preferably in the monsoon season. The rain helps in capturing the spirit of the ragas. The monsoon season supposedly cleans the earth as well as the inner-self of the human being and therefore the melodies of the season strike a positive chord that rejuvenates the spirit of every living creature on this earth.
