CDs preferred over downloads, says UK research

MUMBAI: Does this indicate any relief to the music industry? A new survey conducted in the UK by The Leading Question and Music Ally Speakerbox has found that music customers of all ages still prefer the CD to downloading, a pattern that extends into the lucrative teenage demographic. That's not to say online offerings aren't important, though—those who use subscription or streaming services tend to buy more CDs than others, so online music discovery is clearly helping to keep those sales alive.

Carnatic music legend D K Pattammal passes away

MUMBAI: Carnatic and Tamil film playback singer D K Pattammal passed away in Chennai on Thursday. She was 90. Pattammal was part of the female trinity of carnatic music, with two other popular musicians M S Subbulakshmi and M L Vasanthakumari, who were instrumental in the large scale initiation of women into the main stream carnatic music world. She was a recipient of Padma Bhushan and Padma Vibhushan awards in 1971 and 1998.

Apple incapacitates its iTunes sync feature for Palm Pre

MUMBAI: Apple Inc. has disabled its one of the most compelling features on Palm Inc.'s rival Pre smart phone, crippling the Pre's ability to act like an iPod. Apple updated iTunes on 15th July to block this feature. Users of the recently released Pre had been able to put music on it by using Apple's free iTunes software, a unique twist for a device not made by Apple.
