MUMBAI: Vaishali Mhade, best remembered as Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge (2009) winner, is riding high on the success of 'Pinga' and ‘Fitoori’. These songs feature in SLB’s magnum opus production ‘Bajirao Mastani’. However, none of this has happened for the singer overnight. She had to strive hard to make her place in the competitive Hindi music industry. In conversation with Radioandmusic.com, Mhade talks about her association with Sanjay Leela Bhansali, her life post Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, and the real life challenges. Excerpts.
How was it working for Sanjay Leela Bhansali?
It was wonderful to get this break after five long years. My entry in the Bollywood music industry hasn’t been an easy one. There was lot of waiting and struggle involved. At the end of it all, it seems worth it.
Did you face any challenges while singing for the perfectionist – Bhansali?
The song 'Pinga' has this antara that is breath taking. The song does not give you the space to breathe. Singing that particular antara was the biggest challenge, but I managed to do it.
Where were you post Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge win?
I took up a lot of stage shows and I sang for some regional films. I sang for ‘Damadamm!’ and ‘Hunter’ in Bollywood. In fact, I was in touch with Bhansali sir all this while, but the right opportunity did not come my way then. In fact, back then Bhansali sir had also told me that we would work together someday for sure. So, when he started working on ‘Bajirao Mastani’, he wanted someone to bring the Marathi flavour to the songs. That is when he thought of me.
What setbacks did you face during your struggle period?
It was difficult for me to make a career in the industry with a kid to look after and also my house. There were too many responsibilities to look after. So, yes, there were ups and downs, but then music never left me. In fact, it gave me lot more energy to fight the battle.
Did you ever want to quit the industry?
Being a musician is not easy. There are times when you get enough shows to perform at. It means good work and then there are other days when you have nothing. Everything here is indefinite. So, there were times when I wanted to step back, but the city (Mumbai) does not let you leave.
You have also faced a lot of issues with your voice.
God has gifted me with a good voice, but it isn’t a very healthy one. In spite of me being very careful about my diet, I keep catching colds. For a singer his/her voice is the most important thing. You cannot tell an organiser or a music composer that your voice is not good on an XYZ day. You will have to sing no matter what the condition is. I usually just pray for a good voice.
Who/what has been your motivational factor?
My best friends. I have this bunch of friends who are always there for me. They always stand by me and motivate me when I have my set of lows. I believe everyone needs a friend.
What are your plans for 2016?
I wish to work with A.R. Rahman in 2016.
