MUMBAI: Music composers Rohan Utpat and Vinayak Salvi who have given music to nothing less than 400 to 500 ads recently made their way to the 70mm with Ashwini Iyer Tiwari’s ‘Nil Battey Sannata.’ The composer duo is best known for their ICC World Cup 2015 song ‘Mauka Mauka’ got the Bollywood mauka through the director of the film and they grabbed the opportunity with both hands. They not only composed the music of this recently released film, but they also gave the background scores.

“When Ashwini offered us to work on a film song we straight got working. The first song that we worked on was ‘Maa’. She liked the scratch and we got working on the rest,” said Rohan.

Vinayak added, “She knew our zone of expertise because we have worked on various projects together.”

Tiwari not just gave Rohan and Vinayak the freedom to experiment with the music, but she also let them select the singers and the lyricist for the songs. “The brief given to us was to shape music in Indian space and yet keep it rustic and contemporary,” stated Vinayak.

With the brief in hand the composers created – ‘Murabba’, ‘Maths Mein Dabba Gul’ and ‘Maula’.

Rohan also sang ‘Maths Mein Dabba Gul’ with singer Aarti Shena. “Aarti is a friend of mine. So, we sang the scratch together and then we tried getting other singers to sing the song. But, everyone felt it sounded best in our voice,” stated Rohan.

The duo also experimented with the other songs by adding some hatke elements. They roped in Neuman Pinto to sing ‘Murabba’ for the composer jodi wanted it to sound more western. In ‘Maa’ a male voice was used instead of a female just to make it sound little different in this woman centric movie.

‘Maula’ is the only song that Rohan and Vinayak tried keeping simple because they just wanted a beautiful voice to do the magic. They roped in Nandini Srikar for this song.

‘Nil Battey Sannata’ did well at the box office and so did its songs. In fact, the duo has been getting some Bollywood inquiries since. “This was a very good launch for us. Our music was liked by all and now it’s translating into more work,” averred Vinayak.

The background score of the film too has been liked by the industry. The duo tried giving the background score a live feel by getting in like instruments like guitar, sitar, vilon, aida and rabab, amongst others.
