Directed by Anuraga Kashyap, the soundtracks from Gangs of Wasseypur reflect rustic and raw flavour of the Northern India’s rural heartlands. The album composed by Sneha Khanwalkar, who made a mark in the music industry with her sound-sourcing music has once again proved the versatility and prowess of her composition.
The album enlisting 14 tracks opens with Jiya Tu, sung by Manoj Tiwari. The song has a very catchy tune and an earthy feel with a typical Bihari touch setting a tone for the album. The frequent use of drums and damaru at background is quiet pleasant on ears. The use of Bihari lyrics has uplifted the number from its regular self.
Second song on the disc is a Hinglish song, ‘hunter’ which is dominated by English lyrics. The song promises to be an instant hit with the aid of racy lyrics, hummable tune and clever use of Trinidadian Soca and chutney music by Khanwalkar
O Womaniya Live, sung by Khushboo Raaj & Rekha Jha is the winner track of the album with its peppered Bhojpuri lyrics. The song instantly grows on the listeners as it has minimal arrangement of harmonium, guitar and drums. The overall feel of the song and rawness compels listener to add the number in a repetitive mode.
The duet number ‘Keh Ke Lunga’ is crooned by Khanwalkar with noted music composer Amit Trivedi. The hard hitting music blends well with the singers vocal and instantly captivates listeners with its lyrics which are noted by Piyush Mishra.
The album also features a soft melodious lullaby Ik Bagal, which has some heart-wrenching lyrics penned by Piyush Mishra . The next song Bhaiyya is a pacy track with some incomprehensible lyrics. Tain Tain To To, which is sung by Sneha again, is a very catchy blabbermouth song.
Sung by husky-voiced Usri Banerjee, ‘Manmauji’ is a typical romantic track whereas the last song on the disc, ‘Humni Ke Chhodi Ke’ is a slow and heart-wrenching Bhojpuri number. The ode rendered by 14-year-old boy Deepak Kumar from Muzaffarpur depicts the story of a boy who pleads to his father to take him to his mother.
Overall, the album features well experimented tracks which once again applauds the composer creative side and her typical spirit of breaking the boundaries. The album succeeds with its experimented tones and well-penned lyrics.
