You have heard her in Dev D singing Yahi Meri Zindigi and in Mere Brother Ki Dulhan with Choomantar. Yes! We are talking about the super sexy Aditi Singh Sharma who has created ripples with her latest tracks ‘Dhat Teri Ki’ and ‘Dhoom Machale’. In a candid conversation with Radioandmusic.com’s Dhairya Ingle, the singer talks about her upcoming projects, hobbies and much more.

Excerpts:

You have lived abroad for many years, which genre of music did you learn and whom did you learn from?

I have grown up travelling around the world. While in kindergarten I was in Poland (Warsaw) and then studied in Russia (Moscow) through middle school for five years and came to Delhi during high school. Both my siblings live in Canada, thus I fly there very often. I started representing my school GD Goenka right away and won many accolades and continued to do the same in college (Sri Venkateswara) after which I fronted a couple of rock bands in Delhi and started performing all over the country. Finally my playback career started with DEV.D, thanks to Amit Trivedi. My mother trained me in Hindustani classical when I was four years old for about six months.

Tell us about your journey as a singer. How difficult was it for you to make your name in the industry?

Well, ‘Dhoom Machale Dhoom’ is my 23rd or 24th song in my playback career. I have been very fortunate to have been able to work with SO many music directors including Amit Trivedi, Shankar Ehsaan Loy, Ram Sampath, Pritam, Sohail Sen, Himesh Reshammiya, Raghu Dixit, Salim Sulaiman, Vishal - Shekhar. I feel very blessed and have sung songs catering to different genres.

It was difficult of course, as I have grown up fronting English rock bands and never thought I would ever be a playback singer in this industry. But I worked hard, and am still learning and trying out different genres and exploring different styles.

It has been an amazing year for you with ‘Dhat Teri Ki’ and now Dhoom 3. How did Dhoom happen?

It has been an incredible year for me. In Coke Studio Season 3, I had the privilege of performing at IIFA with Pritam alongside Arijit Singh & Benny Dayal and now the year is ending with 2 back to back film songs ‘Dhat Teri Ki’ and ‘Dhoom Machale Dhoom’!! Pheww .. I just feel so grateful and overwhelmed. I feel blessed to be a part of the 'D' franchise. I have worked with Pritam on 2 songs (Raabta / I’ll Do the Talking) in Agent Vinod and was so fortunate to have performed with him alongside Arijit Singh and Benny Dayal at IIFA this year with such a massive response. He just called me to try my voice on the song and I am guessing it fit in

Which is the genre you enjoy singing? Why is it so close to you?

I always wanted to sing different genres. I wanted to sing the romantic song and the rock song and the fun song and the dance song, etc. I have been fortunate to have a versatile playlist to my credit so far where I have a ‘D D D D Dilli’ as well as ‘Raabta’ and ‘Main Heroine Hoon’, ‘Dhat Teri Ki’, ‘Dhoom Machale’, ‘Choomantar’, ‘Luv Ka The End’, ‘Dheaon Dheaon’, etc. where all the songs are so different from each other.

Is Bollywood your main focus or is there something else on the side? You were planning to write your own songs, how far have you reached with the same?

I have always said I am not that great a songwriter as yet, so I am concentrating more on Bollywood and I have had the pleasure of collaborating with so many amazing artistes and have shared stage with so many too. I am playing a lot of gigs with my band GROOVE ADDA. The gigs and the studio have been taking up a lot of my time and I am working more and more to be a better studio artiste as well as a better stage performer.

Name one composer whom you would like to work with?

Like I said earlier, I have been very fortunate to have been able to work with almost all the music directors. But still on my list are AR Rahman, Vishal Bharadwaj, Sachin Jigar, Sajid - Wajid, Bappi Lahiri. I want to work with everyone.

Of all the music composers you have worked with, who have you found most accommodating and comfortable?

I really think all of them are so accommodating and cool and amazing at what they do. The music industry is growing rapidly and evolving as so many different genres of music are coming together and we have such amazing artistes in our country. I am so grateful to be a part of the industry at such a good time and to be able to work with people who are so good at what they do.

What are your upcoming projects? Any year end plans?

As of now I have two releases next year. Year end plans - have stage shows lined up with my band GROOVE ADDA and hope to get called more by the studios too.

Which are the recent places that you have travelled to?

Recently, I travelled to Macau, Dubai, Goa and Punjab.

Apart from cooking, what are your hobbies?

I think when I find time I love to cook for my loved ones and with the tight schedules we all go through I chill with my friends whenever possible as when all of us are working it is very hard to meet.
