MUMBAI: This year’s World Radio Day has got the world jetting their thoughts out with the power pack theme Dialogue, Tolerance and Peace. UN Secretary-General António Guterres spoke a few words on this occasion that aims to celebrate world’s third largest medium.
He states, “UN Secretary-General Radio is a powerful tool, even in today’s world of digital communication; radio reaches more people than any other medium platform. It conveys vital information and raises awareness of important issues. It is a personal interactive platform where people can air their views, concerns, and grievances. Radio can create a community. For the United Nations especially or as a peacekeeping operation, radio is a vital way of informing, reuniting and empowering people affected by war. On this World Radio Day, let us recognize the power of radio to promote dialogue tolerance and peace.”
World Radio Day was first proclaimed by UNESCO’s 36th General conference on 3 November 2011. Spain had earlier proposed this to the UNESCO Executive Board after which each year, with a new theme, World Radio Day has m been celebrated. The earlier themes were - Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Radio, Youth and Radio, Radio is you, and now t2019 theme Dialogue, Tolerance, and Peace.
