One million users for Spotify in its first week innings in India

MUMBAI: Spotify made a grand entry in India and made headlines for its aggressive pricing, which might make its competitors run for money. And after its one week long innings in India, the world famous music app has garnered one million users in its kitty, including both premium and free users.

At the onset of its India launch, Spotify got entangled into a controversy with Warner Music owing to which Indian users will be getting limited songs of popular international artists like Pharrell Williams, Linkin Park etc. But, the makers are in no mood to budge and have landed in the Indian waters with a proper business and marketing strategy. Spotify’s aim is to bring regional music under its umbrella, which is indeed a good move in a country that has a humongous reservoir of regional music.

Besides, according to a report given by Indian Music Industry (IMI) and Deloitte, India has about 150 million music streaming app subscribers. Among the lot, about 14% either are subscribed to Amazon Prime, which offers Amazon Music or are using music streaming service encapsulated in their mobile plan.

Well, with Spotify embarking on its India innings on a promising note, we will have to wait and watch, how its competitors like JioSaavn, Apple Music, Gaana, Wynk Music etc plan their strategies to deal with the storm called – Spotify!
