UK charts to take into account streaming plays for compiling position

MUMBAI: The UK pop charts are looking to follow in the footsteps of their US counterpart by including not only download sales, but streaming data as well, when compiling positions for the Top 40 chart. Currently, the charts are decided by digital download sales, along with the sales of physical copies.

Head of music at BBC Radio 1, George Ergatoudis said at an industry event yesterday, that the charts will soon reflect streaming data, by taking into account number of plays on various music services like Spotify and Youtube.

The Official Charts Company will merge data from both charts- that of sales and of streaming. However, it has not yet been revealed how either will determine the chart position. With the move in place, the UK will be joining the US and Germany, who also account music streaming in their charts.

Last year, music streaming in the UK, increased by 33.7 per cent and now makes up for almost 10 per cent of the revenue from recorded music. According to reports, 7.4 billion tracks were streamed through ad-funded or premium services in 2013. It was also the fifth consecutive record year for British single sales, which increased by six per cent from the previous year to 188.6 million. Out of that 99.6 per cent came from digital downloads.

Daft Punk's 'Get Lucky' was the most streamed track of 2013 in the UK. It was followed by 'Pompeii' by Bastille and 'Blurred Lines' by Robin Thicke.
