Google Doodle's tribute to Ustad Alla Rakha

MUMBAI: Indian tabla player Ustad Alla Rakha's fascination to tabla started at the age of 12 and continued to rule the later years of his life. This fascination mesmerised many generations to come and Google Doodle reminds today's generation about the maestro by celebration its birth anniversary.

Jammu born Ustad Alla Rakha was trained under Mian Kader Baksh of the Punjab gharana. Many know him as ‘Ustad Alla Rakha' but the full name of the legend is Qureshi Alla Rakha Khan. His legacy is carried forward by his children. Padma Shri Zakir Hussain, Fazal Qureshi and Taufiq Qureshi, have achievers in different levels. Meanwhile, his daughter organises various musical evening to pay tribute to her father's work. These events usually witness the brothers sharing the stage.

Padma Shri awardee started his career as an accompanist in Lahore and then as an All India Radio staffer in Mumbai (then Bombay) in 1940. Later, he also composed music for some Hindi movies for few years in his career. Quite often he accompanied Ravi Shankar in his career.He was awarded the Padma Shri award in 1977 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1982.

The doodle has a still illustration of Ustad Alla Rakha playing tabla and the O's of Google is turned to tabla.

He died of heart attack at the age of 80 on 3 February 2000. He died within 24 hours after the death of his daughter Razia.
