MOSKO to bring UK Garage feel to Mumbai at 'Live From The Console'

MUMBAI: Performing for the first time in Mumbai at Live From The Console (LFTC) on 6 June is the four-piece band MOSKO, which hails from Delhi. Kavya Trehan, singer/songwriter who originally formed the band with Moses Koul (guitarist), talks to Radioandmusic.com about the band, its members and music.

MOSKO is an unusual band in every way, from its conception to every member to the kind of music they create. The other members include Koul (also part of bands like Kraken and L for Vendetta), along with drummer Bhairav Gupta and bassist, Abhinav Chaudhary (of The Circus). While all of them have other projects as well, Trehan calls MOSKO her 'baby' and she initially came up with the idea of forming a group when she was asked to perform at Ragasthan 2014.

When Trehan explains the reason behind the name of the band, she says, "We are totally into symbols. The 'S' is for infinity when you tilt it by 90 degrees, 'M' is for Moses and 'K' is for Kavya; while the two 'O's are for the other entities, the remaining members of the band."

On forming this unique band, she says, "You know, normally, artistes play on their own turf but, we do not. All the members play and compose music of completely different genres individually like experimental metal, dream pop and alternative rock. But, when we come together, we leave everything aside and focus on UK Garage with a grunge feel, dance and groove."

The band's music is inspired by artistes like Artful Dodger and Prodigy but, she insists that they are still quite different with a whole lot of elements in their music. "Our music is a blend of the different kind of people that we are. Each one of us brings our respective individuality and we create music together. Our music is.. 'MOSKO'.. I am using it as an adjective here hoping it will catch up," Trehan quips.

The band has been jamming relentlessly to prepare for their upcoming gig at LFTC. The chirpy songwriter says, "We are all stoked. This is the first time MOSKO is going to perform in Mumbai. Ever since we got this offer, we have been impatiently waiting to play for the crowd in this city." Abhinav Chaudhary will not be able to make it for the concert but, Karan Malik (drummer of Mindfunk) will be replacing him.

The band has composed two new songs with Malik. Trehan says, "Just like the band name, one of our tracks that we newly composed called 'Vector Bosh' is symbolic of how quirky we are as a band. The song has dark sides to it hence, 'Vector', a reference to the evil/mysterious character in Despicable Me." The other songs that they will be performing at Mehboob are 'Full Stop', 'Dance Dance Revolution 'and 'Tobasco'. She adds, "All our songs have tangy tunes and beats that make the tracks a lot of fun to play."

Coming from a musically inclined family, Trehan started composing music at the age of 14 years. Having travelled to a lot of places and studying in France for a few years, she has been highly influenced with different cultures which emanates from her music. Besides song writing, she also plays various instruments like the guitar, violin, flute and the drums.

She signs off by saying, "I am super excited for LFTC. I have seen that the audience in Mumbai is so open and accepting to artistes from other places. I am hoping that it will be a success and we want to give everyone a grand time. I just want to collapse when the last note hits and everyone is exhausted from all the 'MOSKO-ing'!"
