Casey Kasem, voice of Shaggy, dies at 82

MUMBAI: American Top 40 host and voice-over artist Casey Kasem passed away on Father's Day at the age of 82 years.

The radio legend suffered from Lewy disease, a disease with symptoms similar to Parkinson's. His children took him off life support in a hospital in Washington at 3:23 am to end his suffering and his long battle with the disease.

Kasem's daughter, Kerri Kasem, broke the news through social media, "Early this Father's Day morning, our dad Casey Kasem passed away surrounded by family and friends."

She added, "Even though we know he is in a better place and no longer suffering, we are heartbroken."

Radio host of AT40 on Premiere Networks and celebrity Ryan Seacrest expressed his condolences, "It's a sad day for the broadcasting community and for radio listeners around the world. When I was a kid, I would listen to Casey Kasem's AT40 show every weekend, and dream about someday becoming a radio DJ. So when decades later I took over his AT40 countdown show, it was a surreal moment. Casey had a distinctive friendly on-air voice, and he was just as affable and nice if you had the privilege to be in his company. He'll be greatly missed by all of us."

Kasem was the original voice-over artist of Shaggy of Scooby Doo and many other cartoon characters like Mark from Battle of the Planets, Robin in Super Friends and a few of Transformers series characters.

The late radio personality was a member of the National Radio Hall of Fame and has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
