The Circus to play at Dubai's The Music Room
MUMBAI: Alternative rock band from Delhi, The Circus has achieved another milestone this year by getting a gig at The Music Room in Dubai on 19 September. As part of the Big Balls of Fire alt rock music festival, the band will be playing at the venue, which is known for showcasing stellar live music. The band commented, "We are very proud to take our music to Dubai."
The Circus will be playing alongside bands from across the world and is the only representative of India, although, this is not their first international gig. The Circus performed in Australia at One Movement Festival with major acts like Karnivool and Dead Letter Circus in 2010.
The group will play tracks from its previous two albums- 'From Space' and 'Bats' at the event. A new track called 'Discourse', which will be a part of their third album, will also be played live. The Circus, with members Abhishek Bhatia (vocals), Arsh Sharma (vocals/guitars), Abhinav Chaudhary (bass) and Anshul Lall (drums), come out as an extremely quirky and an atypical band. This is evident from their unconventional track titles like 'FOPS', 'Spontaneous Combustion Love Song', 'Poxilation Chickachaemia' and others. Bhatia explains, "When we are dreaming we have all these abstract thoughts. The lyrics need to come out as they are and not be like something we have contemplated about for years."
Bhatia reveals that they have started working on material for their third album, with four tracks written and ready, including 'Discourse'. Their upcoming album will contain eight to nine tracks and the vocalist assures that it will be different and bigger than their previous albums. He says, "We are done with a demo or two and are relentlessly working in the studio. We might release a single early next year, and right now we are focusing on an elaborate writing procedure for the album."
The reason behind the band taking it slow with regards to the album is that they are also working on a few music videos for tracks from their album 'Bats', which was released in March 2013. They have worked with Vijay Kate for the track 'In this Laboratory there are no rules' and are also working on a video for 'Insert Name Here'. The first one is about a scientist experimenting in his laboratory, much like what the band does with its music, and the latter will be a skit involving drama. The videos will be released via the band's YouTube channel soon, since the video for 'In this laboratory..' is almost complete.
The band members are also involved in their own projects. Bhatia is also popularly known as 'Curtain Blue', a solo live electronica project. He has been writing/composing music for this project for more than four years and has finally decided to go out and play. Curtain Blue will be playing at the Pune edition of NH7 this year. Sharma is part of the duo electronic act FuzzCulture whereas Lall and Chaudhary play with post-rock band Ioish. Chaudhary is also a member of UK Garage band MOSKO.
The Circus will be performing at Shiva Squad Festival in Manali, which will take place on 25, 26 and 27 September and The New Wave Musicfest in Goa to be held in November. They are also a part of the line-up of 'The Delhi Alternative' at NH7 Weekender, which is a collaboration between different alternative bands. Besides these, the band will also perform for an arts charity event at Summer House Café in Delhi on 13 September.
