MUMBAI: Spotify has finally rolled out its ad-supported, free streaming service for Windows Phone users, after what has been a long wait. Windows Phone users will now join Android and iOS users, who have both enjoyed free subscription of the popular music app on their handsets since December 2013.
The new update will allow Windows Phone users to create their own shuffle playlists, access existing playlists and listen to tracks on shuffle, rather than listening only to songs on-demand. The app also allows users to browse through playlists based on genre or mood and shuffle play through artiste catalogues.
Microsoft Corp corporate VP Steve Guggenheimer addressed the new app saying, “We're excited to see Spotify made available for free on Windows Phone. This puts a much-loved listening experience in the hands of Windows Phone fans across the world, and beautifully showcases both our platform and the Spotify service."
Previously, the Spotify app was available on Windows phones, however, only through a premium subscription. It included offline and ad free listening on a monthly basis for ?9.99, $9.99 or AU$11.99.
The Spotify app for Windows Phone users will has been tweaked a bit and will offer easier music discovery and a better appearance for search results.
Spotify is currently available in more than 50 markets around the world. Earlier this year, the company announced that it had a subscriber base of 10 million paying users, and a total user base of 40 million.
