MUMBAI: "If you look for perfection, you'll never be content," said Leo Tolstoy. The quote could be apt for music composer duo Ajay Atul, who not only wish to get better day by day, but also get into the skin of the character or a protagonist while composing music and thus emphasise on details. Composing a number of varied tracks like 'Chikni Chameli' from 'Agneepath' and ‘Mauli Mauli’ from Marathi film ‘Lai Bhaaari’, the duo have juggled between Bollywood and the Marathi music industry. Their latest Marathi film 'Lai Bhaari' bagged a lot of accolades and the two have successfully made their presence felt in both film industries.

“When Atul and I were composing music for ‘Lai Bhaari’, we were having a tough time. Our father was unwell and was in the ICU, so it was difficult handling work and people at home. This was the time ‘Shree Ganesha’ from ‘Agneepath’ had just released. The song ‘Mauli Mauli’ was the last one to be created and the project is very close to our hearts. With the awards we received, we feel that it was a blessing by our father, who departed from this world,” said Ajay Gogavale.

While making music the duo highly considers the script they get from producers. They make sure that they get into the skin of the character and only then compose the music. “Before getting to the studio, we get a clear idea of how the protagonist is, where he or she resides, how he or she communicates to the people around. After getting a clear picture on this, we make music,” he elucidated. The two claim to never have gotten into a creative tiff with each other. “At times, if we do not like something in our song and one of us expresses our displeasure, we do not try and convince each other and just change it,” he further added.

He does not shy away from the fact that the Bollywood as a brand has a bigger reach than the Marathi music industry, but at the same time feels that things are changing as people wish to watch a Marathi movie in theaters.

When not composing or not in the studio Ajay loves to maintain a low profile by spending time with his kids, but does not teach music to his kids. “I do not ask my kids to sit next to me and learn music as we were never forced into music. It was an energy that took us towards music and this is something that we were automatically dragged to music,” he further stated.
