RJ Sucharita: Celebs sharing your work on social network gives you credibility

Being a radio jockey for seven years, RJ Sucharita has come a long way. Currently hosting the ‘11 se 2 wala Mumbai Masala’ show on Radio City, the RJ adds a daily dose of ‘tadka’ to the lives of Mumbaikars. Hailing from Delhi, Sucharita got her first break in radio at the age of 19, and since then has never looked back. In a candid conversation with Radioandmusic.com’s Dhairya Ingle, the RJ spills the beans about her childhood, her hobbies and more.

Childhood:

I come from the capital of India, Delhi, and I studied Science. Being the studious kind, I was among the top rankers in my class and of course, was the teacher’s pet. Because of my studious nature, a lot of people thought I would become a doctor or engineer. After high school I decided to give media a shot as I had an aptitude for it. I studied Journalism and Mass Communication. By the time I was in my final year of college, I was already working.  I then came to Mumbai for my post graduation.

Breaking into radio:

When I was in Delhi I used to do a lot of voiceovers and that was when someone suggested I should audition for an RJ, and I got through. Initially I was an outside broadcast RJ, and my job involved going to various places in the city where exciting things were happening. I would call the RJ sitting in the studio and go bonkers about the event. It was great as I was in love with my city and it also helped me get over my phobia of meeting new people. A couple of months down the line I had my own show. When I auditioned in 2007, I did not tell my parents because I knew they would not approve. But when I got selected and had to start working full time, I had to tell them. Obviously my parents were against the idea, but I was of the opinion that I could save their money as then I would not need pocket money. But when people would come to them, and complimented me, they were okay with it.

Memorable incident:

I started on radio a long time ago, and there are times when you forget certain dates like anniversaries. There was this one time I was doing a show, and I was celebrating someone’s birthday on air. In the middle of the show I got a phone call from someone saying that I just completed two years at Radio City and I was so happy that someone actually remembered.

Independent music:

I love independent music as I deal with Bollywood music all day. I also try and share the music through my social network and Radio City as much as possible. There was a time when I listened to loads of Avial, Raghu Dixit, Mutual Question and many more.

Importance of social media:

Social media is like the blood in my veins. When any celeb comes to the studio and you interview them, and they re-tweet or repost, it just adds creditability to you work.

Social Causes:

Oh yes! For the recent Nepal earthquakes I organised a crowd funding programme and generated about one lakh rupees which went to Care Nepal. Every time I feel I can help someone, I do it.

Leisure time:

I read a lot. I read any book that comes under my nose. I watch every movie that releases. I watch a lot of American television online. I love super hero cartoons, and I like singing and writing.
