Udit Narayan denied Padmashri?

MUMBAI: Singer Udit Narayan, whose name had been  nominated for the civilian honour Padmashri this year may find himself out of the list. The official version now is that since Narayan was born in southern Nepal, he is ineligible for the honour bestowed by the Union Government of India on exemplary citizens. Brushing aside the rumours, Narayan stresses that he was born in Baisi village in Bihar, a fact that is denied by the Biharis themselves. Narayan claims  that he has been singing for 40 years and is an Indian.

YouTube offers Indian musicians unique platform

MUMBAI: The world's most popular online video community YouTube has announced the launch of the "YouTube Symphony Orchestra" (www.youtube.com/symphonyin), the world's first collaborative online orchestra and summit in December 2008. The purpose of this initiave is to give Indian musicians a unique opportunity to perform alongside musicians of all instruments and styles from all over the world. For this, musicians from the Bangalore based William Joseph International Academy have also been roped in - their performances will be filmed and uploaded to YouTube.

Former ITV chief to chair EMI

MUMBAI: Charles Allen, the former chief executive of ITV, has been appointed non-executive chairman of EMI Music, the company behind Katy Perry and Coldplay. Allen was appointed by Guy Hands, whose Terra Firma private equity group bought the ailing music company in a highly leveraged ?4bn deal just before credit markets turned. Citigroup financed the buy-out.

Japan's Pioneer Corporation launches India unit

MUMBAI: Japanese audio music systems maker Pioneer Corporation has announced the launch of its Indian subsidiary Pioneer India Electronics (PIEL) on  Friday. PIEL will promote sales, marketing and after sales service primarily in car electronics business in the country. The company is targeting a turnover of Rs five billion from the Indian operations by the end of 2010.

My FM tweaks content as per listener tastes, launches campaign

MUMBAI: Based on the findings of a week-long seven state Radio Survey conducted last month covering Chandigarh, Indore, Bhopal, Jaipur, Raipur, Ahmedabad and Raipur, the Synergy Media floated My FM has launched a new campaign. Piracy still dogs music industry - IFPI report

MUMBAI: 95 percent of music downloads remain illegal although the global music industry is making progress in clamping down on online piracy by evolving radical new ways of selling tunes, a new IFPI report says. The annual report of the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) on the state of digital music, says new business models helped the legal online music sector balloon for a sixth straight year in 2008, growing by 25 percent to 3.7 billion dollars (2.8 billion euros) in trade value.

MUMBAI: Sidhharth Coutto, drummer and founding member of erstwhile band 'Zero' has composed the background music of PVR Pictures' upcoming film Mere Khwabon Mein Jo Aye and is also making his Bollywood debut as an actor.
