VOA Hindi radio service to be shut down

Voice of America's Hindi radio service will cease on 30 September 2008. First launched in July 1955, the VOA Hindi service has been one of the most popular language services broadcast by VoA. According to sources in the Hindi sources of the VOA, about six staffers will lose their jobs once the service is dismantled. The website and a once-a-week, seven-minute segment on news television channel Aaj Tak will continue, it is learnt.

Event Review - An evening of Kajaris

Vocalist Soma Ghosh, 'Manasputri' of Shehnai maestro Bismillah Khan paid a tribute to the legend at "Yaad-e-Bismillah", an evening of memories, organised by Madhu Murchhana to commemorate Khansaab's second death anniversary. Madhu Murchhana is an organisation devoted to promotion of Indian arts, culture and music. Recollecting some memories of Baba, Soma Ghosh delivered some of Bismillahji's favourite kajaris accompanied by instruments like the Pakhawaj, Khol and Dholak, played by Shankar Nandi, son of maestro and tabla player Ustad Nazeem Hussain, among others.

Gyaan Vani offers DW content in 4 more languages

MUMBAI: German broadcaster Deutsche Welle has signed a memorandum with the Indira Gandhi National Open University's (IGNOU) Gyaan Vani FM station that will now include Hindi, Urdu, Bengali and English language content over the 29 campus radio stations. Talking about the new tie up IGNOU director V.K. Arora said, ?“The states and region to broadcast the shows in regional language will differ from campus to campus. China blocks iTunes

MUMBAI: China has blocked Apple's iTunes music stores after an album of protest songs compiled by a US-based Tibetan activist group was downloaded by Olympic athletes. Alleging that some athletes are listening to protest songs, the Chinese authorities raised its 'Great Firewall'.

MTV Arabia to turn solemn during Ramzan

MUMBAI: MTV Arabia, the Viacom-owned youth entertainment and lifestyle channel operating in the Middle East, has announced that it will mark the holy month of Ramzan in quiet contemplation, and air only cultural news programmes and reality shows. During the month, MTV Arabia will refrain from playing music videos in its programming. The fare will reflect the solemnity of the holy month, said Samr Al Mazouqi, the channel's manager.

Apple iPhone 3G debuts in India

MUMBAI: A moderately warm welcome greeted the Apple iPhone 3G as it made its debut in India at the stroke of midnight on Friday.
