Big FM announces winners of Big Singaara contest

MUMBAI: Big FM has announced the winners of Big Singara singer contest of Chennai on June 21. Daphne Kumaraswamy and R Srinivasan won the contest on World Music Day. Winners will get a chance to strike chords with music director Vijay Anthony's forthcoming movie. Winners were announced in the presence of music director Vijay Anthony, playback singers Sangeetha and Mahathi.

SMG shareholders consent to Times' Virgin Radio buyout

MUMBAI: Scottish Media Group (SMG) shareholders have agreed the sale of Virgin Radio to The Times of India Group. At the company's general meeting, shareholders backed the disposal, which is due to be completed by 30 June. The national radio station was bought by a consortium including the Times of India Group, one of India's largest media and entertainment firms, for ?53.2m at the end of May 2008, says a Guardian report.

Microsoft extends its download service till 2011

MUMBAI: Microsoft has decided to change its earlier decision announcing the plan to discontinue authorization for music downloaded through its old MSN Music service. The company has announced to extend its service for music downloads, or authorizing new computers and devices for playing that music, for over three more years till 2011 than the earlier decided date of 31 August.

Apple's iTunes hits five billion mark

MUMBAI: Apple Inc has announced that it has reached the historic landmark by selling more than five billion songs through its online music store iTunes. The sales figures hint that the demand for digital music is growing remarkably. Data from retail research firm NPD Group suggests that Apple has replaced Wal-Mart stores as the biggest music retailer in the United States.

Music sales lowest in 20 years, says IFPI

MUMBAI: International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI), the global music agency, has come out with some depressing numbers for worldwide music sales for 2007. According to a report in Timesonline, the worldwide music sales have tumbled to their lowest level since 1985. That year, total sales of recorded music hit 1.8 billion units (i.e., albums). In 2007, the IFPI says that the equivalent of 1.86 billion units was sold, down from the previous year's 2.09 billion.

Universal signs on Bangla rock star Hassan

MUMBAI: As part of its label revamp, music major Universal has roped in Bangladesh's renowned rock musician, Hassan. Hassan, who has a formidable fan following in his home country, has been signed on by Universal on a three year contract. Part of a well known band Ark in the early nineties, Hassan went on to later form another band Jonmobhumi. Universal now plans to cut solo albums with the song writer- singer star as well as get him into mainstream Hindi, including Bollywood.
