MUMBAI: Canadian rapper Drake, who had a whopping 13 nominations at the American Music Awards 2016's 44th edition, walked away with two awards - for the 'Best Rap/Hip-Hop Artist' and 'Best Album' - the  best-selling 'Views'.

Drake also debuted a new Apple commercial during the show, which featured him working out and lip syncing to Taylor Swift's ‘Bad Blood.’ Also former One Direction boy band member Zayn was voted best new artist.

Several big names in music were present to witness the award ceremony at the Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theatre on Sunday night. The awards had some emotional performances like John Legend’s ‘ Love me Now’ and a duet by Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj’s ‘Side to Side’.

Bruno Mars regaled the audience with '24K Magic', the lead single from his just-released album of the same name. Selena Gomez,  walked the red carpet in a red full-length gown and was a contender for the night's top prize - Artist Of The Year - to be announced at the end of the evening surprised fans by making her first major public appearance. Gomez walked home with the 'Favourite Female Artist - Pop/Rock' award.

An emotional speech by Prince’s sister, Tyka Nelson, grabbed the audience's attention while receiving the award on behalf of her brother for ‘Best Soundtrack’ for ‘Purple Rain’.

"Prince defied the odds, as a black teen from Minneapolis with a goal to electrify the world. He had the courage to be different," Nelson said. "With his vision and god-given talent, he is still one of the world's most respected and loved artists."
