UK Digital album sales hit an all time high

MUMBAI: According to newly released figures from the official UK Charts Company - the group which tracks U.K. chart positions, the digital album sales climbed by 69.3 percent in comparison to the first quarter of 2007. The company also confirmed that sales of digital single tracks climbed 42.3 percent, every year. The news is encouraging for the music industry since it means that digital music buyers are beginning to see album purchases as viable as using services such as iTunes.

UTV New Media snaps up 'Singh is Kinng' digital rights for Rs 40 mn

MUMBAI: Junglee Music, Times' Music's sub brand, has sold the digital music rights of 'Singh is Kinng' to UTV New Media for an estimated Rs 40 million. The deal is considered to be the costliest in the digital music rights category so far in India. Junglee Music intends to "redraw all boundaries of music distribution in India."

Punjabi pop singer Sukhbir resurfaces with new album

MUMBAI: 'Prince of Bhangra' Sukhbir, who has been lying low for a while, returns to the music circuit with a new album called "Tere Naal Naal" to be launched by music label T-Series. The album due to release next month, marks the comeback of the singer after a six year hiatus. The Dubai based singer says, "I was busy working on my father's Kirtan album called Nirgun Raakh Liya. It's been a childhood dream. So last year we finally released it and I even got my good friend Akshay Kumar to sing a track for us. Later I moved on to my new album, which is now ready for release."

Big FM plans three shows to bring in humour

MUMBAI: Big FM Mumbai plans to pump up the humour quotient in the programming mix by launching a series of shows to tickle listeners' funny bone. 'Son Sonny', 'Bombay Bawa' and 'Lyricist Lahiri' will be the three new shows to go on air soon. The station has however not declared the launch dates of the shows. 'Bombay Bawa', a funny old man who loves the city, its people and is in tune with the latest vibe will remind listeners of the good old Parsi of Mumbai.

IPRS files case against SRK's Kolkata Knight Riders

MUMBAI: The Indian Performing Rights Society (IPRS) has filed a copyright infringement case in Calcuta High Court against Shah Rukh Khan's Indian Premier League (IPL) team Kolkata Knight Riders. IPRS alleged that the team had played 14 popular Hindi film songs like Dard-e-Disco and Mauja hi Mauja without its permission.

Enil Q4 revenue up 47% to Rs 669 million

MUMBAI: Entertainment Network India Ltd. (ENIL), which operates the FM station Radio Mirchi, has seen a 47 per cent surge in standalone revenues to stand at Rs 669 million for the quarter ended 31 March, 2008. During the period, the companys net profit stood at Rs 71 million. On a consolidated basis, the companys revenue was Rs 1.26 billion for fourth quarter of FY 08.
