Dolby, RIM settles lawsuit over audio patent

MUMBAI: Dolby Laboratories has withdrawn its patent infringement lawsuit against Research in Motion (RIM) as the BlackBerry maker inked a licensing deal to utilize Dolby's audio compression technologies. In June, Dolby sued RIM seeking financial damages for past infringements and sales injunctions on Blackberry smartphones and Playbook tablets. Dolby claimed that RIM used its audio compression technologies without obtaining licenses.

Arvind Kumar to move out of I&B Ministry

NEW DELHI: Arvind Kumar is moving out of the Information and broadcasting Ministry. Presently Joint Secretary (Broadcasting) in the I&B Ministry, Kumar is to take over as the Chief Vigilance Officer in the National Buildings Construction Corporation from 1 October. Arvind Kumar, an Indian Administrative Service officer from Uttar Pradesh from the 1988 batch, had been elevated from the post of Director in August last year. He succeeded the slot vacated by Zohra Chatterji.

NRSC seeks location-based services technologies for terrestrial radio

MUMBAI: The National Radio Systems Committee (NRSC) in the US, co-sponsored by the National Association of Broadcasters (Nab) and the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), has released a Request for Proposals (RFP) on location-based services technologies for terrestrial radio data broadcasting that could form the basis for future NRSC standards and guidelines. The NRSC hopes to identify other new and innovative services using geo-location data that will benefit broadcasters and radio listeners alike.

EU extends music copyright from 50 to 70 years

MUMBAI: The Council of the European Union has approved the extension of royalty protection for music performers and producers from 50 to 70 years on Monday, 12 September. The EU said that the new directive intends to increase the level of protection of performers by acknowledging their creative and artistic contributions. The IFPI international group representing the recording industry welcomed the measure stating that its great news for performing artists as established artists can benefit from their work throughout their lifetimes."

Mobile consumer Cloud revenues to reach $6.5bn by 2016: reports

MUMBAI: Mobile Consumer Cloud revenues driven by music and video services will reach to $6.5bn per annum by 2016, according to a new report from Juniper Research. The report illustrates that while initial consumer deployments in the cloud were focused primarily on the social networking space, music and video storage/acquisition services such as Amazon's Cloud Drive and the forthcoming Apple iCloud are expected to gain rapid traction with substantial adoption over both smartphones and tablets.
