Legendary lyricist Gulshan Bawra passes away

MUMBAI: Renowned veteran lyricist Gulshan Bawra passed away at his Pali Hill home in Mumbai on Friday morning. The 70 year old lyricist who penned popular yesteryear Hindi film songs like �Mere desh ki dharti', 'Khullam khulla pyar karenge', 'Yaari hai imaan mera' and many others was suffering from a prolonged illness. Gulshan was originally Gulshan Mehta and was named Bawra (madman) by film distributor Shantibhai Patel due to his fetish of wearing colorful shirts. The industry later referred him as �Gulshan Bawra'.

Radio One plans to raise Rs 500 million

MUMBAI: Radio One, the ailing FM radio business of Mid-Day Multimedia where BBC Worldwide has a 20 per cent stake, plans to raise Rs 500 million. "As part of the investment in our radio business, we are looking at raising Rs 500 million. We are in talks at this stage," Mid-Day Multimedia Group CFO & Mid-Day Infomedia MD Manajit Ghoshal tells Indiantelevision.com.

Warner Music reports $37 million loss in Q3

MUMBAI: Warner Music Group Corp.'s fiscal third-quarter loss widened as the company continues to struggle with a shift away from compact discs, as well as lower consumer spending and foreign-exchange impacts, say reports. The world's third-largest music company said its loss from continuing operations was $37 million, in the fiscal third quarter which ended on 30 June , compared with a year-earlier loss of $9 million. Revenue decreased 9.3 per cent to $769 million, but excluding foreign-exchange impacts was down two per cent.

Fever partners Cartoon Network for on-air contest

MUMBAI: Fever FM has partnered with kids television channel Cartoon Network for an on-air contest as a joint promotion for the television channel's School Contact Programme. The contest which is on-air from mid July will continue for five weeks on the channel. Three chosen kids will then be trained by the station and they will get a chance to be on air along with Fever's RJs.

Kara DioGuardi returns as judge on American Idol

MUMBAI: Kara DioGuardi will be back for her second round as a judge on "American Idol", say media reports. The Grammy-nominated songwriter joined original panelists Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Paula Abdul last season. Her arrival raised questions about the future of Abdul on the hit talent competition. Abdul is still negotiating for next season, the reports indicate. "American Idol" starts its ninth season in January.

PPL sues organisers of Bangalore Fashion Week

MUMBAI: Organisers of Bangalore Fashion Week, Dream Merchants have come under the Phonographic Performance Ltd (PPL) scanner for not paying requisite license fee for the music that was used during their shows between 23 and 26 July. PPL, the apex licensing arm of the Indian music industry, has lodged a complaint with the Bangalore Police against Dream Merchants, the event managers of Blenders Pride Bangalore Fashion Week, and Hotel Ottera where the event was held, for violating the Copyright Act, 1957.

AIR's revenues slip to Rs 1.94 bn in '08-'09

NEW DELHI: All India Radio (AIR) has posted a net commercial revenue of Rs 1.94 billion for 2008-09 'on an expenditure of Rs 9.87 billion. Revenue for AIR, in fact, was higher at Rs 2.03 billion in FY'08 while expenses stood at Rs 9.79 billion. Prasar Bharati posted a net commercial revenue of Rs 10 billion for the fiscal ended 31 March 2009 while expenditure stood at Rs 23.44 billion, leaving a yawning uncovered gap of Rs 13.43 billion. Sources say Prasar Bharati, in addition, has an unpaid liability of Rs 10.71 billion as spectrum and space segment fee.

Sun TV completes equity sale with Astro for radio subsidiary

MUMBAI: Sun TV Network Ltd has announced the completion of stake transfer in its radio subsidiary South Asia FM Ltd (SAFL) to South Asia Multimedia Technologies Ltd (SAMT). Indiantelevision.com earlier reported that Astro will infuse between Rs 750 million to Rs 1 billion into SAFL for the stake. This fund-inflow has followed a capital restructuring in SAFL and Sun TV's stake has fallen by five per cent to 59.15 per cent.
