NEW DELHI: It is up to the listeners and the media including radio and music television channels to help change the tastes of the public to good lyrics and better music, since a lyricist or a music director is often under compulsion to give what the producer or director want. It was different three decades earlier when filmmakers like Raj Kapoor, Guru Dutt and Dev Anand had some knowledge of music and the music directors put their soul into the music for those films.

Bhimsen Joshi honoured by Delhi govt

MUMBAI: Renowned Hindustani classical musician Bhimsen Joshi  has been honoured with a life time achievement award by the Delhi government for his extraordinary contribution to music. The awards, carrying a cheque of Rs 11 lakh each and a citation, were given by Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit to relatives of Joshi at a function. Sahitya Kala Parishad under Delhi government instituted the awards in 2004 which are conferred on eminent personalities for their outstanding contribution in the fields of music, dance, theatre, visual arts and literature.

EMI posts loss of $3.17 billion

MUMBAI: Music group EMI has revealed  pre-tax losses of  ?1.75bn ($3.17bn) in the year ended 31 March 2009 and said it needed more money to stay afloat  Blaming "the global economic slowdown and the continuing rapid decline of the physical market", EMI wrote down the value of its music publishing and recorded music divisions by 1.04bn pounds. The results for EMI, which has deals with Robbie Williams and Coldplay, include more than ?1bn in write-offs.

Ajay-Atul to score for Hema Malini's forthcoming film

MUMBAI: After giving a new life to lavani and tamasha music in the Atul Kulkarni starrer Marathi film Natrang, the National Award winning composer duo Ajay-Atul will now be experimenting with grand orchestral music. According to sources, the talented musicians will next be composing for a untitled Bollywood project produced by veteran actor Hema Malini. Confirming the news, Atul says, "We are doing a film produced by Hema Malini - the music will be heavy with string arrangements and ballads," he told radioandmusic.com.
