MUMBAI: Veteran rocker Gary Lawyer, famous for covering some of pop’s greatest artists works along with his originals believes that rendering versions or covers not only pays tribute to the original artists but also keeps their legacies alive. While, globally, there are copyright laws that must be adhered to by artists and labels, when they cover works of other artists, India's lax and confused laws and regulations, often makes it difficult to shift through the legalities. Even if an artist is ready to pay for covering a song, the infrastructure is not in place.

Legendary singer Shamshad Begum bids adieu

MUMBAI: It’s the end of an era in Hindi cinema as the music industry has lost its priceless gem. Veteran playback singer Shamshad Begum, who was the voice behind classics like ‘Mere Piya Gaye Rangoon’, ‘Kabhi Aar Kabhi Paar’ and ‘Kajra Mohabbat Wala’, passed away on 23 April in Mumbai after prolonged illness.

Will.i.am admits using DJ Arty's song for 'Let's Go'

MUMBAI: Rapper will.i.am has admitted that he used the track of Russian producer and DJ Arty for his new song ‘Let's Go', for his new album ‘#willpower’ which was released on 23 April. 'Let’s Go' was released as a single on 16 April while Arty and Mat Zo's 'Rebound' was released in April 2011. Comparison of DJ Arty’s ‘Rebound’ and will.i.am’s track featuring Chris Brown, 'Rebound' revealed the songs to be identical justifying DJ Arty’s accusations on the internet.

9X Media announces sales team restructure

MUMBAI: 9X Media has announced national restructuring of its sales team. The structure will come into effect from 26 April. Samir Kadam has been appointed national sales head at 9X Jalwa (Bollywood Hits channel) and 9X Jhakaas (Marathi music channel). Prior to this appointment, Kadam was handling national sales at Star Jalsha Movies. Kadam has worked at Star Network, Zee TV and B4U.

Richie Havens passes away

MUMBAI: Folk singer and Woodstock icon Richie Havens, has died, aged 72. The folk singer who immortalized himself at Woodstock died of a heart attack on 22 April his family said. Brooklyn born Havens was the first performer at the three-day 1969 Woodstock Festival. He returned to the site during the 40th anniversary in 2009. He was known for his crafty guitar work and cover songs, including his well-received impersonation of Bob Dylan’s ‘Just Like a Woman’.

Maestro violinist Lalgudi Jayaraman no more

MUMBAI: Carnatic violinist, Lalgudi G Jayaraman passed away on 22 April in a private hospital.  According to agencies, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa paid tribute to violin maestro Lalgudi G Jayaraman, describing his death as a “great loss” to the world of music. I was deeply grieved learning about his passing away,” she said.
